Heavy use includes frequent video calls, high-resolution video, large cloud backups, hotspot use or working remotely without dependable Wi-Fi. These activities can consume data quickly and may justify a larger package or an unlimited-style plan with a fair-use policy.

Check your phone’s mobile-data usage for the last month. Divide the total by the number of days, then adjust for the trip. Remove usage that will stay on Wi-Fi and add extra capacity if you expect more maps, uploads or hotspot use.

A large allowance is only useful if the plan remains active for the entire trip. Check whether validity begins at purchase, installation or first connection. Also confirm whether unused data can be topped up or whether a new plan is required.
